A look at corduroy as a wardrobe essential

Corduroy is a popular fabric among people of all age groups. Corduroy can be made into different garments, from jackets, skirts to pants, in stylish cuts and patterns. This adds to the popularity of the garment. The fabric gets its name from the cord or cable like structure appearing on the surface of the fabric. Corduroy qualifies as a wardrobe staple as it offers comfort, warmth and style. It is a durable and available in many colors and prints. The fabric is also known as corded velveteen/elephant cord/ pin cord or Manchester cloth.
There are some things to watch out for when wearing this fabric. If you are voluptuous, avoid wearing corduroys with wide cords as it adds volume to body frame. Choose a fabric with smaller and finer cords for a fitting look. In addition, if you are short, wear corduroy with vertical cords to add to your vertical length.
I have always enjoyed wearing petite corduroy pants and skirts. Corduroy pants are simple and chic. I mostly pair mine with a plain oversized tee. You can either tuck it in or leave it as is. For the winter season, wear this outfit with a long cardigan or a comfortable wrap. Ensure that the sweater/ cardigan are fitted and do not give a bulky look.

For long, corduroy skirts were declared as fashion faux pas. However, a straight A-line dark colored corduroy skirt makes for an elegant wear. Additionally, you can also experiment with pencil skirts or flared styles in this fabric, provided it looks flattering on your body type. Pair a corduroy skirt with a leather belt and wedges to complete the look.
Garment care is extremely important for this fabric. Here are few instructions:
  • Always wash the garment inside out and dry naturally in shade or air.
  • Never twist or wring the fabric as it might harm the pile.
  • Iron inside out and then smoothen the pile to negate the ironing.
